Since 1976, Kolkata Book Fair has been taking over the city – it is a 12 days event to cherish and stumble upon all things beautiful in the literary world spanning across the globe.
Known to all, Kolkata’s love affair with books is intense. And International Kolkata Book Fair is a symbolic depiction of this perfect union: the pungent smell of books, the blast from the PA speakers, the seething heat, the background noise and the legions of book aficionados perfectly encapsulates the true blue character of this literary fest. As a matter of fact, the theme of the 43rd International Kolkata Book Fair is going to be Guatemala. It is scheduled to be launched on 30th January 2019 and will last till 10th February 2019.
Getting into the details, Mamata Banerjee, the honorary chief minister of West Bengal will inaugurate the fair, which is going to take place at the Central Park fairground in Salt Lake City, Kolkata. While the focus is on Guatemala this year, Iran is expected to participate in the fair for the first time. Besides, 11 Latin American countries, the UK, the US, Russia, Japan, China, Vietnam and Bangladesh will also take part in the fair, and come up with their stalls in the mela ground. Tridib Chatterjee, general secretary of Publishers and Booksellers Guild shared this bit of information with the reporters at a recently held press conference.
He also revealed that a few Pakistani publishers may also take part in the fair this year. “A few people (publishers) from Pakistan have communicated us and expressed their willingness to participate. If they get visa on time they will also come,” added Chatterjee.
What’s more, Giovanni Castillo, the ambassador of Guatemala in India attended the press conference. Even he unveiled the logo of their country stating “The Heart of the Mayan World – Guatemala” (Corazon del Mundo Maya Guatemala) during the event. Numerous publishers from Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, Gujarat, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu are expected to participate in the fair this year.
Talking of records, the last edition of Kolkata Book Fair recorded a footfall of 2.2 million visitors and it earned revenue worth Rs. 22 crore from selling books. This year it is believed that books in more than 24 local languages will be available in around 600 book stalls with more than 200 little magazine stalls.
Apart from this, the 6th Kolkata Literature Festival is going to take place from 7th January to 9th January at the same venue.
